i got this computer froma friend its BIOS version is somthing like AMBIOS 1.17, it has a 550mhz AMD athalon processor. A 4 meg video card, and 128 mbs of ram. I put in the install disk of the distro, lets say madrake 9.1 because i tried that one as well, i get the thing that asks me to install in the graphical or text, so i pick one (it doesnt matter which one i pick i have tried both) then it loads up and this happens

Look here. You need a patch for the older systems.

http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/errata.php3

Hope that helps.

Turn plug-and-play off in the BIOS.

Yea, that too.

je_fro, like the picture. I think I'll watch it for a while. I'll wipe the drool on occasion. :o :o

Not for my suggestion...
Just go into the bios at boot and kill anything that looks like PNP-OS.
And with that much RAM, do a text install...
You may not want to run KDE/Gnome, either....

why does that Plug-and-play in the BIOS always bother most distros of linux??

I know i have to turn it off, but just don't know the reason behind it.

Try here.

http://www.redhat.com/support/resources/howto/rhl9.html

You will want to look at the errata page for your version. That one is for version 9.

Since I'm going to bed, here is a good search engine for Linux info. If you are going to use Linux you will need this.

www.google.com/linux

Good night.
