Im installing Debian 2.4.18-bf2.4 on a Compaq Presario 1255 laptop, by network
installation. Everything went fine until the point when I have to download
the base system from the mirror. The dialog by default gives you the mirror
http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ They say that the default should work just fine. Well It did not work fine. I got an error dialog saying:
The server was unavailable or contained no release file

I try 10000 different debian mirrors and gave the same error. So here Im posting some info from my log

user.info dbootstrap[80]: mount: Mounting /dev/hdc on /instmnt failed: No medium found

user.info dbootstrap[80]: wget: server returned error 404: HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found

user.info dbootstrap[80]: The server was unavcailable or contained no release file

I have no idea why is it mounting hdc? I onbly have one hard disk. As a primary.

I ping a few website to check my connection and it is working.

any ideas?

Did you leave the cd disc in the drive also? What I did was use the cd to install the base system and then I went online to upgrade to SID for my installation.

Here's a good article (http://www.linuxjournal.com/article.php?sid=6742&mode=thread&order=0) on setting up a base system on a laptop, then upgrade you to Sid.
