automatic (mated?) document feed.

Automatic Document Feeder

Method/device by which one can place a stack of documents to be scanned on an automated basis. This allows the user to scan, say, the next copy of the Federal Budget into his/her OCR, and then go have a beer (or the whole keg) while the computer chomps away at it unattended.

Libraries, universities, and museums may have a use for them, but your average home user probably won't. Again, like automatic door locks, some people need them, some don't...

I'd also be a bit worried about compatibility with Linux. This looks like a Windows-only device, since no mention of Linux or Mac is given...

Since most scanners scan with the document face down, it would feed from the bottom, wouldn't it? From the looks of this model, it seems as if the feeder would attach to the back (side?), and "drop" the pages rather than "pulling" them from a bin (as laser printers do).

Besides, I was "making a funny"...

The photocopier I've just been slaving over has a similar feature - the RADF or Reversing Automatic Document Feeder.

What it has is a slanted tray on the side that you slot your document in face down in order and the underside of the "lid" has a wide "belt" going the whole length. When you start it up, it drags in the bottom sheet (or the top of the pile, since it's face down) using the belt and copies it. Since it's an A3 copier, it feeds one A4 sheet, copies it, feeds another, copies it, feeds another, spits the first one out and so on.

My guess is that the ADF would feed from the bottom (i.e. the top sheet) and everything would come out reversed, unless you have software which can cope with it.

And if it doesn't work in Linux, you can borrow my Belkin USB2Ethernet adapter which Linux thinks is a scanner anyway.
