Following a security page, I added "DocumentRoot ~" to the proftpd.conf file...Now testing this, I tried to "cd /" it said command successful but issuing a "ls" displayed that I was still in my home directory for the logged in user...I take it the chroot was successful?

Yes, in some clients it may say that your in root directory.
