hmm... OpenOffice can take quite some time to load, even on some fast computers. But other than that, I like it alot, it doesn't take much time to learn at all (if you are familiar with word proccessing programs). as for Koffice, i have never used it, so i can't really offer anything there.

Among other things, I tend to write a lot...

KOffice:
Actually just a series of programs that are grouped into one menu. Not bad, comes with the KDE package (at least it does with Redhat), and does the job. However, if you're going to write for a living, and screenplays are something in that job description, go right to OO. Why? The "standard" font for writing screenplays happens to be courier 12pt (10 cpi). Not ariel, helvetica, times roman, or zapf dingbats. Courier 12pt. Well, I typed in an entire episode using this font, went to print the first page, and the formatting was screwed. Royally screwed. Further investigation revealed that the courier 12pt was being displayed as courier 10pt on the screen, but printing correctly on the printer. This meant that what I thought was a 56-page screenplay would wind up being about 75 pages. So, I went to try out...

AbiWord:
Cool. I mean, how many word processors do you know of that'll support bi-directional printing (left-to-right and right-to-left)? Well, I ran into the same fscking problem as KWord - lousy formatting with courier 12pt. Also, the translation of file formats left much to be desired. About the only thing they understood well enough was "ASCII Text". Another big sigh, and on to...

OpenOffice.org:
Paydirt. Yes, it's big, bulky, and kinda slow to load, but it worked as advertised. Even the courier was "spot-on". It loaded/converted most of the files I had sitting in my documents folder without incident. I haven't played around with the full suite of apps in here, but the WP is first-rate. Like AbiWord, OO also has a Windows version available, to make it even more compatible cross-platform.

Not only do I recommend OO for any Linux user, but I've taken every opportunity to load/install it on any Windows box I have access to. On my Win98SE partition, the only MS software I now use is... well... Win98SE. Thanks to OO, Mozilla, and all the open-source stuff I can find.

Open office is simply just more sexy than koffice.
