Hello;

I was curious to know what operating systems government and security agencies use... what do you think? If they use Linux, do you think they re-program it to suit their needs...?

... your thoughts?

Linux is very popular in Europe, Asia, and NASA. The servers for the US govn't run FreeBSD, predominantly.

Last time I checked, whitehouse.gov was running on GNU/Linux.

How did you come to that conclusion? I tried using Netcraft, but it timed out.

If the IRS website is any indication, whitehouse.gov is probably behind Akamai, or however you spell it, which is what the IRS was behind.

Trogdor, just for a little info. I worked at NASA AMES research center (in California). And the basic setup was this: the true hardcore science people used Sun and SGI computers. The clerical staff used Mac OSX. And the management and the basic servers (like the local mail server, that type of stuff) ran NT (probably XP now, this was 3 years ago).

But then, i only got a small glimpse of the entire center, so I can't generalize what i say to be all of NASA.

The BC government is moving to or already using Red Hat enterprise for the servers, there is a whole department for "open systems" now.

(I work for government IT services)

Hi;

Thanks for the replies. What do you think they used before Linux-Windows? Did they use Unix?

You know, I actually did... Im not really speaking particularly about operating systems running webservers though. Im mainly talking about the systems they used to send eachother emails, files etc etc... I shoud have made myself more clear.
