(http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/biztech/09/18/microsoft.gates.ap/index.html) b00zer 09-18-2003, 03:05 PM That is quite humorous. :p sasKuatch 09-18-2003, 07:14 PM I don't like it. "... give to get" I wonder what Billy G's gonna get from this. je_fro 09-18-2003, 07:23 PM First you must embrace your enemy. Then you slip him the blade. They've been doing this for 20 years. Ask Jobs. BaVinic 09-18-2003, 07:58 PM I think is it awful; when a great man like Sir William Gates III, extends a hand of friendship to the Linux Community only to pull back a nub, its mean, its rude and it is just not right. whhaaat, wow, what a dream, I dreamt I was defending Bill gates. Like that would ever happen. there is something up with that artical, he is up to something. Lemming 09-18-2003, 08:14 PM I was reading today in a PC magazine, I forget which one, that the EC have just issued their final warning to Microsoft on the subject of unfair business practices (I think it was). Keep your friends close, and you enemies closer.... hard candy 09-18-2003, 10:09 PM 1. Microsoft Money For Linux 2005- $29.95 2. Microsoft Wallet For Linux 2005- Free 3. Wow, that's not what I got. That's not the shock or the rub. 1. MS isn't alone in this. Open source "friend" IBM is too. 2. It will run across a number of platforms and is non-OS specific. "This is a fabric for someone to do e-commerce that's independent of the operating systems that are out there." 3. The two executives said they would turn their developments over to Internet standards bodies. This takes control away from MS and IBM and puts it into the hands of the "community". 4. Gates said the Redmond, Washington-based company's work toward Web services standards would be "royalty free." See #3. Microsoft can't screw anyone financially on this In a way it means that Microsoft will essentially need to market a version of the product that anyone else can market as well (ie Linux distros). Of course some would argue that MS could make their version incompatible later. That's hard to do with IBM breathing down your neck as well as any other provider. That my friends, is the shocker. Of course look forward to the impressive PR spins and Ms ringing this for all its worth. WE HAVE ADDED YOUR TECHNOLOGICAL AND BIOLOGICAL DISTINCTIVENESS TO OUR OWN. YOU WILL ADAPT TO SERVICE THE COLLECTIVE. RESISTANCE IS FUTILE." I remember the same being said of Intel: "I am Pentium of Borg. Division is useless. You will be approximated." Anyway, it's an interesting article, but I fail to see a reason why Microsoft would want open-source technology. I mean, they tried old-hat marking techniques to "prove" that the Total Operating Cost (TOC) of Windows-based networking was cheaper than Linux ("independant audit") which is pretty unlikely considering the massive amount each company pays for MS licences. Also, they claimed that staffing costs would be higher. Hell, did WE go out and pay to learn Linux client and server construction? I think not... I'll dig out the article, but if that came out last week and this is now out, you'll have to forgive me for being cynical, but I'd like to see how this develops before I pass any judgement. Gotta admit, I do like his joke at the end - very Microsoft. James dduran@linux 09-19-2003, 05:18 AM It's all about compatibility..
