if you've got aumixer installed check to see that the sound level's are muted, if you havent got aumixer installed install it, it will be on your red hat cd's, also i've read a few threads about red hat and mp3 problems, it could be that have a search here if your tryin to play a mp3

It's a Hercules Game Fortissimo 2 pci soundcard and I get no sound during the sound detection.

what module is sound card detection loading? you could also try installing sndconfig from your RH CD's using the package manager & then running the utility. it should be located in the sound and video section of your package list after you install this run it from a root konsole
to get to a root console type su at the prompt then press enter then enter your root password. then at the root prompt type # sndconfig then press enter & follow the directions and see if this utility will load the correct module
