Hi, im trying to setup an old quad pentium pro system and i have ran into a problem. The motherboard has only one ide slot. So can i hook up the hardrive and cd-rom drive to the same ide cable? or will there be a decrease in performace?
Thanks

You'll get the performance of the slowest unit on the channel, which presumably would be the CDROM.
Other than that, there should be no problem. You may look into getting another IDE controller on a PCI card though.
Cheers :)

Just to add to that, if you want to save a bit, then rather than go but a IDE PCI card, get a cheap crystal sound card with an onboard IDE controller and use THAT controller for the CDROM.
Otherwise, if I was gonna buy a PCI HD card, I would go with a SCSI card and get a nice SCSI HD. Them dual P pros and Quad pros are sill pretty nice boxes and will handle quite nicely for small servers.
