Ok I'd first like to point out that im a comlete linux newbie. So try to explain in a way I would understand. Anyway here is my situation.

After spending about a month downloading red hat 9.0 on a 28.8k dial up modem I finally got it all installed. Installation went smooth. I soon realized that it wasn't detecting my modem. After opening up the box and taking a look at it and doing some research, i came to the conclusion that it is a winmodem. I have spend the last two days going through the guides at linmodems.org and I can never get it to work. So I went out and bought a USB modem hoping that it would work with that. After setting it up I went to the hardware browser and it was detecting it. Conexant inc, HSF v.92 data/fax modem. So I go to the internet configuration thing and it says probing for modems. After a few seconds, it says no modems found. ...

So.... How do I get this to work?

It sounds like its found the internal modem again HSF conexant is almost certainly the win modem.

[you@localhost ]$ lspci -v

see if it shows the HSF modem there.

A note about USB odems, if they come with drivers they are often win modems also, just in USB form, if it had a driver with it you could be in the same position as before.

Post the actual manufacturer/model of this USB modem to get further help.

Alternatively take USB modem back and get a serial modem ;)

Ok the original winmodem that I had is a pctel hsp56 micro modem. It still hasn't detected that one. The usb modem I bought is (from the box cover)a Zoom/Modem USB Model 3090.

I just tried running the lspci -v command and it said command not found. I have been getting that a lot. With depmod and insmod also.

And this is the only external modem that the store sells.
