I have new computer built, consists of;
MB:Asus P4P800
CPU:2.4
Mem:512 DDR433
HD:SATA Seagate 120Gb
I successfully installed windows XP, but I can't install Mandrake 9.1 or Redhat 9.0 because of chipset driver, do you know other way to install Linux in my machine.
thanks

what chipset are you using? what errors do you get when you try to install Mandrake or RH how do you know for sure your chipset is causing the problem? have you checked the mandrake hardware DB or the RH 9.0 HCL or hardware requirments?

If that refers to a Serial ATA disk, this (http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/archive/8/2003/06/4/65817) may help you out a bit?
Cheers :)

Thanks for the reply, I have Asus MB p4P800 865pe Intel sprigdale chipset with Seagate SATA as my main boot drive. I boot my machine from CDROM and Installation started fine and it detets my mouse and keyboard but it fails to detect device/scsi and it gave a list of options which are not compatible to my HW. I clicked on help and list error and it shows unknown device 865pe chipset and usb and etc... I searched google and other Linux sites and I found that Mandrake 9.1 does not support latest Intel sprigdale or canterwood chipsets. I'm not sure if it is correct or not, I would like more info about this subject and whether it is true or there is kind of work around. I appreciate your time and help you provide.

Unfortunately, as far as I know you biggest problem with that chipset is going to be SATA support, and I don't think there's a workaround.
I could be wrong though (and I hope I am), this isn't from personal experience; just from what I've read.

I did a search of the mandrake hardware DB & found supported intel chipsets for mandrake 9.1 (http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/hardware.php3) you may want to check again for your self to be sure. Also see my sig for the RH 9 HCL
:(
sorry

As stated the SATA chip could be your problem, but It could be that your board is a MS Windows only board. When you toke a look at your board did you happen notice any chips that say WINBOND? If so the only way around that is to get a new board that dosent have SATA or WINBOND chips.

This is very weird...A friend of mine as a very similar setup (diferent cpu though) and he just installed the latest SuSe without problem...I would recomend you that distro because that one i have positive certain that it works (Maybe some distro kernel tweaks they have)

I'm not sure that the SATA is supported by MDK 9.1, matter of fact I'm fairly certian that it isn't. I have an ASUS A7V8X mobo with a Promise SATA/Raid controller and the original MDK 9.1 that I have didn't recognize the controller. However I upgraded the kernel and now it does.
Some of the newer releases coming out now DO support SATA, SuSE is one as well as Slackware 9.1 AND the soon to be release Mandrake 9.2 (I have actually installed the 9.2rc2 on my box and it recognized the controller fine). You may want to wait for MDK 9.2 to be released or try one of the other "hot off the presses" distos.

It might. Last time I herd M$ still has a Strong hold in the PC and market and a lot of companies and programers are still afraid of making hardware (with the exception of a few. Such as IBM and HP) for Linux. But their hold is slipping fast, and linux right now is number 2 on the desktops of businesses and will be with the home soon. So if you want install Linux Look for a mother board that has only MOS chips. And If you still use dialup to connect to the internet you might need to get a new modem. Chances are that your modem is Win modem (a.k.a. soft modems, or lazy modems) because those type of modems use software for most of there data processing and can only be used with windows. The best type of modem to get is an either an ISA or a external one. To find out what hardware is supported go to,
