There's something like 4,000 threads on this topic here. Do a search. You can also go here:

you can go take a look over at www.distrowatch.com and look for floppy distros, they're out there

Floppy distros are good, but DeLi Linux or Vector Linux should run on your machine quite happily. Also, check out Slackware and Debian. I'm afraid the easier distros won't run on older machines, so you might be a bit confused at first:(

all you need is boot disc and then you could get a distro from a cd....rom drive on a another computer (use a knoppix cd if you have no other *nix boxen)

Is not recommended that you install an older version of any distro.
How much ram? Honestly I would use it as a console only box.

You could definately get Slack on there with the floppy boot disks. And I belive the "zip slack" version is available in an "all floppy" install set.

You coud get iceWM or blackbox to run on there pretty good, maybe even windowmaker. But, I doubt Gnome or KDE. If you do get it going, I would definately recomend a custom kernel. Although it would probably take a couple days to compile on that thing. But it would really be worth it:)
