Just got my .iso CD, and tried booting from CD using bios onto an old formatted windows 98 Hard drive. Only, the CD ins't being recognised. Is it because my peanut linux CD (latest version) doesn't do CD installs, or because I missed a step?
-many thanks

Did you burn the cd yourself and if so, did you burn it as a single iso file (wrong) or as a image (correct)?
Can you see files on the cd or just the single iso file?

Just to add to what MD said, Some bioses have problems booting newer CD's and (even though your bios supports CD booting) you will need to download the boot disks to make a set of install floppies.
For help on making the floppies (you will need help;) ) check this thread out: http://justlinux.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=109565

So you do not see files/directories on the cd and only the single iso?

Any bootable Linux cd should be readable in Windows as they use the standard iso9660 filesystem.
There must be something wrong with the cd of which I would advise you to contact the people from where you purchased.

Re-burn a new disk. What burning utility are you using? Nero? Easy CD creator? Be sure to select "burn an iso image" (it is done differently between the two, so I can't be too helpfull unless I know which one you use) and select the *.ios file that you want to burn.
