shutdown file for Gnome

Hey all,
When one in Gnome (in RH9) clicks on the logout icon (in the main list), and selects either to shutdown or to reboot the system, what file(s) --preferrably those I can edit--are being called?

The halt or shutdown scripts in /etc/init.d or /etc/rc.d and the shutdown executable in /sbin.
