I just had a quick question before I install Debian. Does Debian have an option to do a full install of every package on the cds? I know RedHat does. The reason I am wondering is cause I am running into all sorts of dependices issues with Mandrake 9.0. And I am sort of getting frustrated with all the packages I have to install. When I installed all the packages available under RedHat 8.0 I didnt run into nearly as many dependecy issues. Only reason I uninstalled RH 8.0 is because it ran very slow on my PII 400 :( So if Debain doesnt have the option to install all packages what Linux flavor does besides RH? Thanks alot!

LOL, i think there's over 40,000 packages on the debian mirrors.....best you don't install them all. What debian does do though is when you ask to install programX it knows that X depends on Y and installs them both. No more 'Dependency Hell tm'

I don't know how new you are to Debian but Debian's package management system (aka APT) handles dependencies "automagically". Therefore installing every single application to avoid dependency hell would be unnecessary. Now if you still want to install every single application off the CD's I suggest you read the Debian Install Guide at http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/install.en.txt, specifically section 8.14-8.15. I definitely reccomend the install guide over at http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=2016 if you want to do things the simple way. Good Luck!

So Debian handles rpm dependices better than Mandrake? I cant tell you how many packages I have had to install under 9.0 :( Now my regular desktop that I have a dual boot on has Mandrake 9.1 and I havent had nearly the problems with that box. I would have installed 9.1 on my server box except one of my cds was bad. But if Debian handles package dependecies better that is great! Can't wait to try it out.

Debian is source or deb package based and not 'rpm'.
Have a look through the Debian site ( www.debian.org ) and documentation on their package management such as apt-get.

Uhhh....Debian doesn't use RPM's. It has its own package management sytem called APT which uses .deb's. It's an entirely different beast all together. If you're still confused head over to www.debian.org and look for documentation on APT.

Ahh I didn't realize that Debian uses a different package system. Well after reading up on it, it sounds like is should be easier to use :) And I guess if by some chance some software I wan't isnt available .deb package I can always just compile it myself. I can't wait to install Debian and start messing around with it.
