Hi !

I tried to install Debian for the first time and got all the way through (installing packages and all). Then on reboot I get this error :

[...]
Unpacking psutils
CPU0: Machine Check Exception: 000000000000004
Bank0: f200010000000800
Bank1: f200000000000175
Kernel panic: CPU context corrupt

So I figured it could be a faulty CD, or a bug. So second try (with a different CD that came with a magazine) :

When installing packages (right after dselect), I got :

[...]
Unpacking <can't remember>
CPU0: Machine Check Exception: 000000000000004
Bank0: b200010000000800
Bank1: f200000000000115
Kernel panic: CPU context corrupt

Does anybody know what caused this ? Isearched the web, but the usual kernel pnaic has to do with "init". Also, a mandrake install failed. Could it be the machine ? It's memory perhaps ?

Any ideas ?

when you goto install debian, the very first screen to pop up should be a prompt (before language seletion, after bios). normally, you just hit eneter at this prompt, and it says loading kernel... blah. instead of hitting enter, type in bf24 and then hit enter. I'm thinking it might be a weird hardware support thing. Using the bf24 option will give you a newer default kernel, with newer support for stuff.

I forgot to mention it, but the first install was with the default kernel and the second install was with the bf24 kernel.

Unfortunately, that didn't solve the problem...
