I just recently bought a HDTV and all I know is that it can take a number of different input, everything as far as I am concerned. The salesperson at Best Buy said I can hook up computer video to the screen, but unless I had the right type of sound card I would be unable to get audio. Anyways, I do not have a DVD Player so I want to get a DVD Player (external) which will allow me to see the video on both my computer monitor as well as my HDTV. I think it is more of a matter of getting the appropriate cables. Does anyone know what I absolutely need to consider in terms of cables and hardware to enjoy a DVD Player on both my HDTV & Monitor. Component Cables?

Thanks Alot,

You need a video card with TVOUT. As far as cable goes you need a S-Video cable.

OK Great! I think that I have this because I looked at my video card and it has a white looking interface in addition to the blue interface/connector.

Actually I think I have DVI cable connector. It is a white connector with 3 rows of 8 pin holes and some holes for a slab and same with my TV. S-Video are round with about 10 pins inside of it. Is this right?

Svideo is round with 4 pins and a black key.
most computers that have svideo have 3 extra pins which are used to attach a dongle to so you can get RCA output from the Svideo port. this is useful so you don't have to buy crazy converter boxes. But as for HDTV, you have to figure out what type of inputs the system can take and then figure out the correct cabling you can hook it up with. my suggestion is try to work with the DVI or Svideo.

just so you know, DVDs are not recorded in high definition. it would require a media with MANY times the storage capacity of DVD to record an entire movie in HD.

at the moment, there are HD Tape players (with tapes recorded digitally) that you can watch High Def movies on (these players are expensive - around the same as DVD players were when they first came out - or more) and they are are also working on a disc format using blue lasers that will have the capacity to store an entire movie in HD but that is a ways off.
