I have and XP system set up and I want to put a second hard drive in the computer and install linux to it, what would be the best way to do this so that i dont mess up my xp system and so I can boot from either OS.

You need to pay attention on what are you doing in the install process (the partitioning section). And remember installing the bootloader in the MBR.
