Need help installing RH 7.1 on a Windows XP sysytem

I have and XP system set up and I want to put a second hard drive in the computer and install linux to it, what would be the best way to do this so that i dont mess up my xp system and so I can boot from either OS.

There won't be any problem since you're not going to even touch that partition. You need to pay attention on what are you doing in the install process (the partitioning section).

And remember installing the bootloader in the MBR.

so it is easy to do the linux drive will be a slave, is that ok? And the MBR i gather is the xp drive

There's no prob installing it on a slave hd. No, the MBR is the Master Boot Record.
