G’day all, I work a provincial government IT management ministry and have noted that we have a whole division devoted to open source OS’s and Red Hat is very prominent.
I am a old time user and sys admin of Windoz but just took notice of Linux do to the fact I am just setting and running a Voip designed for amateur radio (Ham) that uses Red Hat as the OS (check out www.irlp.net)
I like the fact that Linux is open source and fun to use! Yes FUN it takes me back to my UNIX and Dos days, I like playing around and even like text-based interface(s)
Anyway is Red Hat going to be the next Microsoft of the Linux world?
Is there a trend toward this?
Thanks from a new convert J

the open source world just need some big company behind it for support and redhat help a lot , they have just created a fund for helping open source projects being sued to pay good lawyers, but it's still far away from microsoft meaningness.

I would say that Lindows is more closer to windowz, meaning its look and feel(www.lindows.com) there are alot of other distros out there like lycoris(http://www.lycoris.com) that are verry much dedicated to the desktop model, but redhat is more focused on the enterprise desktops more than a typical enduser desktop. and not to forget mandrake linux.

I think what he's asking is if Red Hat is the Microsoft of linux.
The asnwer is, not really. But Red Hat is one of the biggest business oriented distributions, and they even protect you from potential dangers by not including things such as mp3 support that could in the future lead to problems since it has a patent.
Red Hat also tends to be the most supported and I believe most linux certification programs usually just focus on Red Hat too!
Of course, you should try out other distros for fun. Personally, I like Debian and have enjoyed it for quite some time now. Others swear by Slackware, which I have also tried and dont think it's that bad. Mandrake is nice and has a GREAT installer, Suse has alot of nice and neat user guides in the box sets (which are kinda cheap btw), and the more religous types swear by all that's holy that Gentoo with it's portage package management is the best there is.
And if you really want to learn linux from the inside out, go get a LFS (Linux From Scrtach) distro!

RH could not have the monopoly MS had, but it does stand for Linux made easy. If you want to give a power assist to your government Linux initiative, get RH. They are on the cutting edge of Linux development.
RHN is $60 per year for a single user entitlement. This gives you the latest kernel and distro updates as they become available.
Gnome is a great replacement for the Windoz desktop. Redhat does the major share of gnome development so if you like gnome get RH.
Lots of companies, including MS, have a ownership stake in RH, so the company remains better capitalized than some of its competitors.
