Guys:

I'm trying to install Linux for the first time on my system. Thus far I've attempted to install Red Hat 9 and Mandrake 9.1, but I'm having the same problem with both, which is that my mouse is not being detected. I'm using a USB mouse (Microsoft IntelliMouse Optical); it worked OK when I borrowed a friend's PS/2 mouse but that isn't a real option. I want to get this working before I actually install anything.

My motherboard is an Asus A7N8X Deluxe, using the nForce2 chipset. I have a feeling that this has something to do with Linux not quite recognizing my USB controller, especially since funky things keep happening with it in Windows when I reboot (like Windows not recognizing the controller and having to reinstall drivers for it, or one of my front USB ports refusing to work anymore).

Any help you guys can give me on this would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have USB support set to legacy in the bios? That might help.

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, that didn't work. Neither did switching the USB controller to strictly 1.1 support.

I have the same board, only not deluxe. I have success with installing nvidia drivers. You gotta download the compressed file from their site. Untar. su.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_nforce_1.0-0261

For Redhat & MDK, get RPM.

If I may, I suggest you put that USB-2-PS/2 converter back on the mouse's connector. It's free. It WILL save you a ton of trouble installing Linux and older Windows since they support PS/2 mice out of the box.

BTW, nforce chipset is so new there isn't any built-in support for it. Have to install drivers/modules manually.
