Hi. Being a newbie around these parts, i've spent alot of time searching and seeking the answers I long for. And wouldn't you know it, I've gotten better customer service in these forums then I have ever gotten from the companies and businesses I give my $$$$ to. IMAGINE THAT!
Anyhow, I just Network installed Debian - Kernal 2.2.20 (I beleive) on a Gateway 2000 SOLO . The floppy on it seems to be very sensitive to the media i used to boot from, so use high quality floppies if you encounter I/O errors with the floppies.
Though my 3COM Lan card was identified, used for the install, I was having issues with getting the wireless Netgear card to work. After 3 hours of java, staring at the LCD, and .5 huoour of tetris. Here's what I did.
I ran 'cardctl ident' from root to list the PCMCIA sockets. The card was listed.
I edited the /etc/pcmcia/config file to include the following under the "Wireless network adapters" heading:
card "NETGEAR MA401RA Wireless PC"
manfid 0x000b, 0x7300
bind "orinoco_cs"
the card information, and the manfid information comes fromthe 'cardctl indent' listing. Rebooted, and tada!
Now, this might have been the wrong approach, I don't know. but it worked. Seems simple, hopefully it'll come in handy for someone someday.
Take Care,
