Hi guys,

I'm running SuSE Pro 8.1 and just attempted to install KDE3.1. This didn't work so I reverted back to the 3.0.x installation that came with the distro.
Everything is back to normal except for the login screen - whereas I used to have the normal "KDE-esque" login (showing the various users and allowing the choice of environments) I now have a rather dull login screen, showing an X-console in the bottom right hand corner with "SuSE at Linux" above the login box. This, as it happens, will only accept the root login information.
I've configured the login setup on Login Manager which seems to check out okay but when I logout I just get the "dull" login screen again.
Also, when logging out I only get the "Logout "option - where previously I got the whole "Shutdown, Restart, login as other user" window.

Have I missed or corrupted a file anywhere - and if so which one and how do I fix it?

Cheers,

Tee

It sounds like your now on xdm as opposed to kdm, switch to runlevel three the as root run kdm.

/etc/X11/xinit/Xclients

/etc/X11/xdm/Xsession

check those scripts

Thanks for that.

However, when try to run kdm it just says "command not found".
Any ideas?

Re-install KDM. It should be on your distro CD's or their FTP site.

Also, are you running kdm as root? It only works as root.

I have the really dull login screen too, and it won't accept one of the logins. I added the user to a group and everything...it accepts the password and then go's back to the login screen. I wish I could have a more exciting login screen though

Did X previously work for any user or has this always happened?

Perhaps X has not been configured correctly. Have a look a your X logfile for any errors.

grep EE /var/log/XFree86.0.log

Thanks to everyone for their help in this. It turns out I'd not reverted the kdeartwork file back to it's original version (this contains KDM).
It's working fine now though.

Incidentally - I think GDM is an equally good display manager (i used it temporarily while I was getting KDM to work again - my g/f can only just grasp KDM which is why I switched back to it!)

Thanks again,

Tee
