yes, X was working fine, then one day i came in and it wont run. i changed NOTHING. no software was installed, nothing edited... it just doesnt work. if i issue the startx command, the screen goes black like its about to start, but it just stays black. there are no errors in the logs either. if i try to run redhat-config-xfree86, the same thing happens, the screen goes black and just stays that way. ill say it again: aaahhhh linux.... it will always be a novelty.

anyone have any ideas?

Bad hardware?

Try rebooting to console only mode (linux 3 at the lilo prompt), and then log in and do something like

startx 2> error.log 1> xlog

If X locks again (or doesn't start, etc), then look in the 2 files and see what's being output.

not sure what youre doing with the "2" but... i delete all the x logs, reboot, run startx to create new logs, and there are no errors after x refuses to start
