File Types and Programs

I want to be able to double click say a movie file and have it open and play in MPlayer. I went to File Types and Programs and change the program for the type of file to qmplayer. It works so I though that is was great and glad that I figured it out by myself sense I am knew to Linux. I am running RH9. Then I close all dialogs then try it again and it does not work anymore. Went back to file types and programs and my qmlayer is not there anymore. I did this in root and as a normal user. How do I set these so they stay like that.

Is that the only time it has ever worked? What were the dialogs you closed about? Have you done a JL search?

That is the only way that I have tried it since I dont know any other way. I closed the main dialog, the dialog for each type of video file(mpg, mpeg). I have done a JL search and could not come up with anything.
