I run a RedHat 9 system and whenever I need to type in Japanese, I boot into Japanese KDE (selecting Japanese from the language screen at logon). From there, I just hit the shortcut key and I can start typing like with the Windows IME.

However, if I boot into the English KDE (default), and I try the shortcut key, nothing happens. I find myself in the English KDE quite a bit and sometimes just need to chat with someone in Japanese or write a quick email. How can I make it so that the shortcut key works in the English one?

Ohayo.

Well, you don't. The way the IME was written, you need to have your locale set to Jp. Although it's nice that the Windows JIME can do this, it'll only work with IE and Outlook - not other programs/mailers. The Linux IME will work with any app that uses XIMP (et. al.), so it has a more stringent control.

As soon as they come up with something that works, I'm sure someone will let us know.

I've been able to use the Windows JIME on everything (Windows XP).

However, it is unfortunate that we face this limitation with Linux. Hopefully, as the software evolves, we can expect more features like this.
