Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : X just stopped working suddenly. what now? jjd228 08-04-2003, 08:52 AM X worked fine for a few weeks. i changed nothing, and one morning I said, startx, and nothing. black screen. rebooted several times and keep getting the same thing. any ideas what i should do? Hayl 08-04-2003, 09:16 AM take a look at the log file: /var/log/XFree86.0.log see if there are any errors jjd228 08-04-2003, 09:44 AM there are no errors in the log. what next? Hayl 08-04-2003, 10:18 AM try startx > log.txt that will pipe any output of the startx command to the file log.txt check and see if you get any output. or just rerun xf86config jjd228 08-04-2003, 10:27 AM i ran startx > newlog.txt and that did not work. the file has nothing in it. what is the command to run the x config in redhat 9? xf86config is not found sharth 08-04-2003, 10:55 AM dince i don't use a rpm distro, i dunno exactly how this would work. but someone should be able to suggest the commands. what i think happened is that you installed something that conflicted with the x server, and to fix the depend, you removed X. sharth 08-04-2003, 11:50 AM but wait. How the heck can newlog.txt have nothing in it... you typed something wrong. it should have at the least command not found, or an error message or something... jjd228 08-04-2003, 11:59 AM nope. startx > newlog.txt as in, redirect the output of the startx command to the file newlog.txt nothing in the file where is the x config utility in redhat? scinerd 08-04-2003, 12:00 PM I have seen this type of problem before on some of my cleint's machines. I would make sure your /tmp filesystem is not full. I have seen X start to start then crash when it can't write to a temp file but this should be showing some kind of error. The other thing you might try but it will wipe out your personal setttings is to move your .gnome or .kde depending on which on you use to some like gnome.old or kde.old. This will cause X remake these directory from scratch. jjd228 08-04-2003, 12:04 PM it seems that X is actually starting fine. it just wont display itself on the monitor. LOL... heres the thing: NOTHING has changed. no software has been installed, no settings changed etc... one day it worked, then it stopped. anyone? please??? KeeperChris 08-04-2003, 09:04 PM where is the x config utility in redhat? If you're running RedHat9, the command is: redhat-config-xfree86 justlinux.com
