For anyone with SuSE 8.1 and planning to get an APC UPS Back-UPS ES 500 (USB cable 940-0127B)someone has preconfigured a version of apcupsd just for this combination.
Download apcupsd-3.10.4pre1-1.i386.rpm from http://www.linux-user.de/ausgabe/2003/03/064-usv/apcupsd.
Getting SuSE 8.1, the Back-UPS ES 500 with USB cable 940-0127B, and apcupsd to work was simply a matter of:
1. Connect the UPS and cable.
2. Install rpm with Yast (click file in Konqueror)
3. Start apcupsd from xterm as root. That's it.
To see the UPS status type "apcaccess status" in xterm. Or if Apache is installed use a browser pointed to http://127.0.0.1/cgi-bin/apcupsd/multimon.cgi.
My complete notes are attached.
