I'm running Slack 9.0, with kde 3.13 When I try to use the graphical login (runlevel 4), kdm loads up correctly. but whenever I log in, whether it be as myself, or as root, all i get is an x-terminal in the upper left corner of the screen set against the background that i had assigned to kdm. from here, I can start kde manually by typing "startkde" but i shouldn't have to do that.

if i do a standard runlevel 3 startup, when i type startx, it jumps straight into kde which will hold me over for now, but im just wondering what i've done wrong

I don't have gnome installed at the moment, but I will once it finished downloading.

thanks ahead for the help

I think you should be able to choose a window manager in kdm. kdm is only the kde login screen, and it can load any window manager. Check to make sure that kde is the WM you are using. The default may be something else.

Check to see if you have .xinitrc in the users home directory.

If not, create using this command as it will add startkde while creating .xinitrc.

echo startkde > ~/.xinitrc

freakmn: i currently have kdm set for loading kde, but i still get the error.

mdwatts: thanks for the suggestion. i tried it, but it didnt change anything

im willing to post any config files that my be relevant. just let me know which ones.

im considering re-installing kde next, barring any other suggestions.

thanks again, all.

Can I take a look at your .xinitrc?

sure. actually, until that last suggestion, i didn't have a .xinitrc file.

so mine contains only the "startkde" command

i imagine that it's not supposed to be that way. To be honest, I have no clue why it isnt there.

Thanks

I know the problem has been solved, but isn't graphical login runlevel 5???

It depends on how you have it set up. You can have many custom runlevels, and many distro's runlevel 5 is default graphical login. I haven't used slackware, so I don't know if this is the case or not.
