now this isn't to put anyone else down or anything but i now consider myself as a true linux user. thanks to Clinton De Young (The Very Verbose Debian 3.0 Installation Walkthrough (http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=2016):from osnews.com (http://www.osnews.com))i was able to install debian on my system and actually get it to work. i am loving apt-get. this thing is awsome. before i had tried this i was trying to follow the official install instructions. i just couldn't get the damn thing to work. also i would like to thank Mr. Young for writing The Very Verbose Guide to Updating and Compiling Your Debian Kernel (http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=2949):from osnews.com (http://osnews.com). with it was was not scared to move from kernel ver 2.2.20 => 2.4.21. this is making me very pleased. and one other thing, i have noticed that WindowMaker isn't really all that bad as a WM. it has some of the things that i liked with flux/blackbox but has some other bonuses. i have my intranet site going and am on a roll. if mister young is listening,.....thank you my friend.
(oh yeah, and who ever listed osnews in one of the threads i thank you too for i would not have found out how easy it is to install debian if i hadn't found that site)
if you would like to go to the site and read up on the "easy" install of debian i have listed the site in the text and in my sig

i am glad that i was able to help someone.
i went a step further. i had just gotten done
installing debian for the 2nd time and i was like....
" I want to make this even more my install" so i
took out pen and paper. the i started to write
down everything that i wanted to install. as a reference
i went to the Debian Packages list (stable) (http://packages.debian.org/stable/allpackages.html)
and read most of the package info. i came up with
a list of about 24 items that i use regularly. and i
didn't use WindowMaker like the instructions did. i
installed fluxbox. i like it better. also fyi, when/if
you install samba and want to connect to a win puter
over the lan you will have to "apt-get install smbfs"
(which i didn't know untill i could not mount my xp accross my lan).
well i think that is all that i got to say and the fact
that i am tired. i am working mid-shifts and 3pm is my morning.

You can also use a Knoppix 3.2 CD (or any Knoppix variants) to install Debian to a hard drive. It's pretty quick and painless and everything gets pre-configured for you. The're just a little bit of tweaking to do afterwards in order to get it just right. See www.knoppix.net/docs
I have my own Knoppix variant- Overclockix

I have installed Knoppix 3.1 before..but that was after I brought Debian 3.0 and tried unseccessfully 4 times to install it..
Yes Knoppix was a breeze to install, but I really don't like to be beaten and getting Debian installed and worling was a real BUZZ....
Thats what makes LINUX so good so many flavours so many CHALLENGES..
I mean how much fun is Windows when you install it and its all there....
Playing, fiddling, tweaking, breaking, fixing then eventually ooopppps reinstalling..... but hey no probs I have a /usr/ & /home/ partitions so no REAL big problem.
Not to mention the excellent help in here....
LINUX rules....
Don't fear the Penguins !

I used the "Very Verbose Debian Installation" when i first installed debian, but with some modifications (x-window-system-core instead of x-window-system) because i hardly ever use those extra packages (xdm etc..)
Is a very neat guide.
Itīs worth mentioning that Compiling the kernel the debian way shouldnīt be called that way since is not the real debian way :D
You can find the REAL debian way here among a lot of other pretty good documents ---->
http://newbiedoc.sourceforge.net/, oh well is not a big deal anyways
