In RH 9.0 I have no sound. I really don't know how to troubleshoot this. When I do log-in I get this error
Sound Server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such device)
The sound will continue, using the null output device.
Can anyone translate that for me? or tell me what to look for, where to look? I've only been running RH for about 5 hours so I really don't know what I should be looking for just yet.

Try 'sndconfig' in the command line.

sndconfig in the command line just leaves me with "bash: sndconfig: command not found"
I'm in Konsole. So dunno what I'm doing wrong. Even tried it logging into root and doing the command in there.

I would first try using the RH9 sound config utility
check here for more info http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-9-Manual/getting-started-guide/s1-fun-sndconfig.html
if that doesn't work you are going to need to install sndconfig it does not get installed by default. you can do this by launching the software installer/package manager you will then need to look in the sound and video section. :cool:

Not another one!!!
Please use these JL forum search results for 'device /dev/dsp' (http://justlinux.com/forum/search.php?s=&action=showresults&searchid=693778&sortby=lastpost&sortorder=descending) to find and solve the problem.
Remember these words... Search first - Ask second. :D
<edit>
Even this thread (http://justlinux.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=108441) just a couple down from yours has a similiar problem and the correct resolution for your particular error. :)

I just tried myself and received similiar results (http://justlinux.com/forum/search.php?s=&action=showresults&searchid=693784&sortby=lastpost&sortorder=descending) of which the same resolution was there.
Just try the best you can and read as many of the search results as you can and hopefully you will be able to fix as many of your own problems as you can. Ok? :)
