For months now I've been trying to get a few Windows programs to run using wine with mixed success. The one program that has made me have to dual-boot is Lotus Notes 5.08 as the best I can get is the splash screen and the window. When I installed Mandrake 9.0, I noticed that there was a trial version of Netraverse's Win4Lin program. The documentation is excellent so I proceeded to install the program. The installer downloads and installs a Win4Lin-enabled kernel and the Win4Lin software. After a re-boot to use the new kernel, you are ready to install Windows (XP is not supported). The windows installation was incredibly fast as it copied the cd to the hard drive and took less than 30 minutes to install, which is at least twice as fast as a regular windows 98 install!

I can now run Lotus Notes in Windows 98 in a window while continuing to use Linux for other tasks. No dual booting for me anymore. Both windows 98 and Mandrake can connect to the Internet at the same time (I used two different IPs although I could have used IP Masquerading)

I know that the purists will probably groan but it sure is a lot easier and hassle free.

BTW, booting up windows from a terminal is incredibly fast -- about 15 seconds.

I recommend that anyone who has to dual boot consider this software. Unfortunately, DirectX is not supported, so I guess that elminates quite a few games...

The evaluation copy is limited to 240 minutes per session for one month. I'm definetly purchasing this software.

Win4Lin 5 has basic support for DirectX, and the hot rumor is that DirectX functionality is a primary development focus for the next release. The new version also allows user selected RAM allocation for Win4Lin, and much improved linking across the Linux/W4L desktops. If you're using W4L4, I reccomend upgrading to 5.

No search engines available for you? ;)

G4L search results for 'win4lin' (http://www.google.com/linux?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=win4lin&btnG=Google+Search) of which the freshmeat.net project one looks to be correct.
