Dunno how helpfull this is going to be, but here goes...

xawtv was working flawlessly till yesterday I fire it up and it gives me an error that whent along theses lines : invalid privileges for videodriver "somthing". So I said fine then and chmod 777 that spesific driver. Fire it up again and this time it was the audiodriver "somthing" and again chmod 777 that driver. Well it worked.. kinda... her's the problem: now every time I fire up xawtv it uses 100% processor power laging the whole computer. Setup is MDK 9.1 with all updates applied. Any ideas?

Digit0... You could try running xawtv at the commandline and monitor the messages it generates. Hopefully you can spot the errors (if any).

Have you try Motv? It is a little better then Xawtv
I know this dose not fix the problem but at less you can see if it is Xawtv or the hardware making the cpu max out...
