I just thought I'd post this to help fellow newbies with the soundcard problems.
Yesterday I added ram to my machine and rebooted. Then I couldn't get any sound. I went through the sndconfig (by the way, I'm running RedHat 8.0) and my soundcard was detected but no sound happened. I searched through this forum and tried about 10 different solutions or combinations of solutions. Nothing seemed to work. I tried my Knoppix rescue disk (which detects almost everything); Knoppix had no complaints but still no sound. At wit's end, I took out the ram that I added (I know that shouldn't have anything to do with it but I was pissed off by that point and was willing to try anything just to get back to where I was). Still no sound. So I decided to try one last thing before re-installing linux: check the back of my box to make sure my speakers are plugged in. oops. Maybe I should have checked that first.

We have all been down this road once or twice.

The simplest thing always seems to be the solution.

As I said to my friend the other day when he said his WINXP wont boot on his new computer. I replied, "well thats the problem. It's running WINXP." LOL

Thanks

I'll move this over to the 'How I did it' forum in case any of our members try a search in that forum for soundcard related tips.
