Not sure if this would be possible but, is it possible to connect my computer from a cellphone? Something similar to SMS, SSH, Text messaging and Telnet all rolled into one. Basically way I see it is you would would use you cell phone to "message" your computer with a command. The first wouls be something like "connect" then it would respond "Username" you type it in "Password" you enter it and then you are connected to the computer. and can enter in any command. Would it be possible? I don't think there is anything like it on the market but would it be possible? And if so is it software or hardware holding us back? I think this would be VERY cool and functional too. Lets say you are at a party with no computer availible but you need to run a prog on your computer to say get the latest security update. This would be good, and to be honest I don't see any MAJOR problems or defects in it. Any ideas, hints, or reason this wouldn't work would be greatly appriecated.

Hmm I had this link for something that did that:

http://codewar.net/cuts/

but the page seems to be down :(

CUTS = Cellphone Unix Terminal Scripts

Alternatively, you could possibly try something with WAP, if you're phone is WAP enabled?

Check out this project: http://freshmeat.net/projects/smsterm/ . It seems to do the same thing you are talking about using ICQ protocol.

Also you might want to check out: http://tuxmobil.org/phones_linux_sms.html

Hope this helps.

You could, say, run a cron.

This page (http://safehouse.dk/data/2002/nov/08/11_00/stools.HTML) has CUTS ver 0.01 available for download incase you want to try it out. Couldn't get it to work on my machine, yet...

Will keep trying and will keep you posted.

PS: This is a really cool idea.

Now how would you find out about a security fix while at a party?

Just read about a SSH client for an Ericsson P800 phone on Slashdot. Check out its website here: http://dreo.org/p800/putty/ and there is a VNC client for the same phone available here (http://www.p800.info/app.php?app_id=13&s=5)

Try this: http://j2mevnc.sourceforge.net/. Its a VNC client, not a SSH terminal.

I have a nokia too, and its installed, but I haven't played with it yet, so I'm interested in seeing if it works. (Then I need VPN software, and I never need an office or a laptop!)

Four words: I have wierd friends. :-)

On the other hand I agree it was a crappy example. Would: Your walking down the street and your completely computeter illiterate roommate calls saying you X crashed. So you hang up, connect to your computer. checks the logs, find the problem, fix it, and all before your appoinment(probaly with a pyscologist since you leave a party to get a security update for your computer:-)) be a better example of a use??
