So, I get this email - gaim has released a new version. I go to the site and read the 'woo hoo' stuff, then go to download it for my red hat 8.0 machine. With version 0.64 they had the file, gaim-0.64-1.i386.rpm. With 0.65 they have 'specificized' it to rh9, gaim-0.65-1rh9.i386.rpm.

[ponders introspectively]
Hmmm.... So, now, is that gonna work with my red hat 8.0? Do I now have to get the tarball and forgo the rpm with my ancient red hat system?

Just seems goofy.

Edit:
Hmmm.. In the time I posted this the 0.65 list went from:

gaim-0.65-1rh9.i386.rpm1947975 0 i386.rpm
gaim-0.65-1rh9.src.rpm3708209 0 AnySource .rpm
gaim-0.65.tar.bz22628620 0 AnySource .bz2
gaim-0.65.tar.gz3676465 0 AnySource .gz
gaim-debuginfo-0.65-1rh9.i386.rpm8749602 0 i386.rpm

to

gaim-0.65-1rh9.i386.rpm1947975 0 i386.rpm

gaim-0.65-1rh9.src.rpm3708209 0 AnySource .rpm
gaim-0.65-debug.exe4797180 0 i386.exe (32-bit Windows)
gaim-0.65-no-gtk.exe1992670 0 i386.exe (32-bit Windows)
gaim-0.65.exe5976844 0 i386.exe (32-bit Windows)
gaim-0.65.tar.bz22628620 0 AnySource .bz2
gaim-0.65.tar.gz3676465 0 AnySource .gz
gaim-debuginfo-0.65-1rh9.i386.rpm8749602 0 i386.rpm

Maybe they'll throw up a ...-1.i386... file soon.

or not.

just get the source tar file and compile and install from that.
make sure to remove the old version first.

Yes, I know that. :p

But my tiny rant still stands. ;)

Hey, I wonder if we're related. :D

Well, you could always download the SRC RPM and rebuild that. It should work just fine. I didn't see anything too strange in the spec file that would make it RH9 only.

But you are right. It is quite goofy, but at least they told you it was for RH9 and you didn't waste your time downloading the file only to find out it won't work.

I guess more specifically, this is why it bugs me:

gaim-0.9.10-1.i386.rpm
gaim-0.9.13-1.i386.rpm
gaim-0.9.14-1.i386.rpm
gaim-0.9.15-1.i386.rpm
gaim-0.9.16-2.i386.rpm
gaim-0.9.17-1.i386.rpm
gaim-0.9.18-1.i386.rpm
gaim-0.9.19-1.i386.rpm
gaim-0.9.20-1.i386.rpm
gaim-0.10.0-1.i386.rpm
gaim-0.10.1-1.i386.rpm
gaim-0.10.2-2.i386.rpm
gaim-0.10.3-1.i386.rpm
.
gaim-0.43-1.i386.rpm
gaim-0.44-1.i386.rpm
gaim-0.45-1.i386.rpm
gaim-0.46-1.i386.rpm
gaim-0.47-1.i386.rpm
gaim-0.48-1.i386.rpm
gaim-0.49-1.i386.rpm
gaim-0.50-1.i386.rpm
gaim-0.51-1.i386.rpm
gaim-0.52-1.i386.rpm
gaim-0.53-1.i386.rpm
gaim-0.54-1.i386.rpm
gaim-0.55-1.i386.rpm
gaim-0.56-1.i386.rpm
gaim-0.57-1.i386.rpm
gaim-0.58-1.i386.rpm
gaim-0.59-1.i386.rpm
.
gaim-0.60-3.i386.rpm
gaim-0.61-1.i386.rpm
gaim-0.62-1.i386.rpm
gaim-0.63-1.i386.rpm
gaim-0.64-1.i386.rpm
gaim-0.65-1rh9.i386.rpm

And, there's nothing, that I found, in the release notes that say anything about the change from ...-1.i386... to ...-1rh9.i386...

I won't lose any sleep over this, it's just an annoyance.

Pretty much. They create the source, users submit most of the packages, and the Gaim team are happy to put them up for download too.

OK, so whoever submitted the previous million releases must have died and the one new submitter must have rh9 on his machine.

Sorry, can't I just get an "amen, brother"?? ;)

more than likely they upgraded to 9, I believe there are quite a few compatibility problems between the two so...

just compile from source. They provide a make uninstall too, so if you ever want to uninstall it you can do that very easily.

also, i got gaim .65 last night and it said I had problems connecting.. for some reason they took out the port number that aim connects through (5190). If you have that problem you have to go to accounts, then click a tab for more options and replace port 0 with 5190.

after upgrading from 0.64 to 0.65 I soon realized that sound didnt work in gaim anymore. So I downgraded back and all is ok now, thought that was kinda odd.

According to the Changelog, it doesn't seem that much has changed unless you really want translation and use MSN chat a bit. Other than that, nothing really changed. You might want to just stick with 0.64...I plan on it. :)

There hasn't been much in the way of features added for 0.65, there has been a lot of work taking place under the surface though. For a while now, Gaim has been undergoing a core/UI split, so it is possible to have different user interfaces capable of running Gaim (there has been word of a text mode Gaim... ).

There was some pretty major work went into 0.65, which is why it took so long to be released. 0.64 has quite a few bugs, which 0.65 fixes - but 0.65 has a whole bunch of new ones.

0.66 is on it's way very soon :)
