Saw this on the Google news

AOL ends ties with Mozilla (http://www.bayarea.com/mld/mercurynews/business/6314306.htm)

and remembered the first time I started up Netscape (on a Apple in 1995)- it was like seeing a new world- it was so neat to go different places with pictures and sound available.
And go Mozilla-you're proving that the bazaar is stronger than the cathedral.

The Cathedral and the Bazaar (http://www.catb.org/~esr/writings/homesteading/)
In the epilogue to the book is the story of how Netscape used the open source model, how Mozilla was started, and its ups and downs.

Ah yes Firebird. I'm just wondering what The Mozilla Organization and Foundation will do with it. One of the goals of the Phoenix project was to continually reduce its size. Hopefully this goal won't be lost on newer versions of the software and will translate to other projects like Thunderbird, Composer, and ChatZilla

Wow. Netscape was also my first browser. Those were years long ago. I think I got the internet in 1994 or 1995. Netscape came on 3 floppies then. Now it's a 30mb download :) It was a great browser...but it got beaten quickly. Other browsers had faster page loads, better GUI, and were just overall better. Then Mozilla spawned and made it great. I know I'll never forget about:mozilla ;)
