change domain and hostname?

when i initially set up the system, it sets up as "localhost.localdomain"

ive heard 3 different people say 3 different things with regard to changing your hostname and domain suffix.

so can someone tell me the proper way to do it?

Also, it depends on your distro, which you don't bother to tell us. Tell us your distro and we'll tell you the correct way.
