hellow everybody !!

Being a linux newbie, I've never been able to run kazaa or kazaa lite using wine !! which ment that the days of my p2p are gone !! untill yesterday when I stumbled into this client !!

MLdonkey is compatible with all the p2p networks !!

Fasttrack, openft, edonkey, gnutella you name it .. ML connects to it !!

you'll find the clinet on : http://mldonkey.berlios.de/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=1

download the mldonkey-world shared.*-linux binary because it contains the fasttrack configration file.

enjoy !! :D

Nope... it's supported just fine. :) The project homepage is located at http://developer.berlios.de/projects/gift-fasttrack/.

Kazaa Lite does work in Wine for me, but I always find it quite crash-prone. Agreed that it's great to finally have something better. :)

An added bonus is having a file-sharing app that can be run as a daemon on a remote machine (say, in a suitably locked-down environment on the all-in-one household internet gateway/webserver/mailserver box) and just connect to it occasionally, rather than having to have a honking great GUI application constantly running in order to keep one's downloads going. Now I can reboot into Windows to play a game without interrupting my downloads and losing my place in the queue.

Unfortunately, however, the devs of the respective protocol plugins aren't in quite so much of a hurry to implement upload as they are download. As a result, the support for quite a number of the protocols (for mldonkey at least, I haven't checked the giFT plugins) is download-only, meaning that anyone making use of them is a de-facto leecher. Still, I'm sure will be fixed soon.

mldonkey isnt supporting openft or any of the napster(opennap) protocals after cvs, they are considered obsolete, since the amount of users and available material are pretty minimal

Could you post a link to this announcement, please? Also, what does "after cvs" mean - that they'll be dropping support sometime after the next release? Any hints when that'll be?

Well, "obsolete" is just plain wrong with regards to OpenFT, as it's being actively developed by the giFT devs. It's supposedly incorporating all the best aspects of the FastTrack protocol, which *certainly* isn't obsolete, as evidenced by Kazaa's success. From http://gift.sourceforge.net:

"OpenFT is a peer-to-peer network designed and implemented by/for the giFT project. Originally, giFT began as a client purely for the FastTrack network but the original development was halted after numerous "security updates" made by FastTrack which changed compatibility in such a way that made it difficult to regain access. As a result, OpenFT was designed to provide an open network loosely based on the concepts understood from the reverse engineering of the FastTrack network."

OpenNap, on the other hand, seems to no longer be actively developed or maintained [from http://opennap.sourceforge.net: "Current release is 0.44-BETA (released September 30, 2001)."] Nevertheless, I think there are still a fair few OpenNap servers around (see http://www.napigator.com/servers/ for instance). It's an established protocol which does the job and has an established userbase, so it'd be a real shame to chuck support for it out of the window.

hey i didnt say it they did, its in their cvs build, righ at the bottom after you build it, im going to rebuild it to get the exact message, but it says that OpenFT and Opennap are/will be dropped and not compiled in mldonkey (obsolete), and my cvs build doesnt have them as options i have everything else though, just not those two

Ok, I was in doubt because someone told me that it was not anymore. I used giFT with FastTrack, it's awesome :)

i love the fastrack protocal, but the community just plain sucks, when i tried kazaa everything was misnamed/corrupt/a trojan (so what with linux hehehe all are based for ms systems)/ or just invalid files, ill stick with edonkey network (xmule)

You need giFT to install it. Apollon is just a client that runs over top of it...

Btw, for those who do have fast track working please see if you recognize the problems I am having in my post at the software forum. Thanks.
