As mdwatts passes the 30,000th post mark this weekend, we, the moderators of JustLinux, have decided to honor him with the unique title of "Grand Master."

Many of us are congratulating Mike privately, but if you have your own wish to extend, or perhaps a story of how Mike helped you in some way, feel free to post it here in this thread!

And thanks, mdwatts, for all of your huge efforts here on JustLinux!

Peace,
Brian Proffitt

30k posts, thats sheer madness :)

well done anyway boss :)

as for stories of how he has helped me, i remember him locking the first ever topic i made on these forums, and thats about it ;)

<edited by mdwatts>

Thank-you Tesl... You obviously did not review the JL Community Help Posting Guidelines prior to posting your question. That would explain it. :)

md is the reason the linux community can boast about fanatical support, through posts like this, and patience to help people no matter how many times you hear the same question, thanks for all the help md

I think due to just how many people he's helped directly, he's helped many more than that (if they bothered to use the search button;) )

I honestly wouldnt be able to say exactly how many times he's helped me directly or indirectly, or given me just tidbits of his knowlege.

He's been an excellent resource to the community, and it defetly wouldnt be the same

mdwatts -- Thanks for all the help :)

You should bring back Annie the avatar. Or is that a little too risque for a mod to do nowadays?

I've been here quite a long time, and I must say, mdwatts is the reason a lot of people have stuck with this crazy OS. Cheers.

I want to say thanks to MD, not only for the answers to my questions directly, but for all the answers and solutions he has provided others, that have helped just by being available.

but I have to wonder, if you deleted all of his posts that say " Search Google" and "read another thread for your answer" how many posts would he have then?? hmmm not many I would guess ( I'm joking of course-heheheh )

Great Job MD!! and all the mods here (no one person should shine above another, when it takes a group to glow (jm-1984))

Here's a big "thank you" for all the help you've given ME! I usually lurk much more than actually posting, and your links and advice are very useful!

Also, thanks for gently pointing us in the right direction when we screw up. You have far more patience than I would, sometimes! Thanks for realizing that we all make mistakes, and for showing us what we SHOULD have done.

This site just goes to show what great people, led by great moderators, can accomplish!

Let's see... A story...

Good job :) Here I haven't even crossed 1k yet. Man...all these people registered in like 2003. Hehe. Where are all the older guys? I bet most of these people don't even remember easyBB. I could never imagine posting 30,000 times. I guess you have a knack for it (well, an extraordinary knack). Kudos to the guy who doesn't get sick of newbs :)

Anyway, keep up the good work.

OK... I'll reply to this (before I prepare my *cough* speach :) ).

I do realize that some may have that impression of me, but let me try to explain.

I have tried and tried to leave the simplest questions for others to reply to and then I come back 12 hours later only to find that same thread still has not received SINGLE reply.

This is not once, but I test this theory a few times a week.

Do I like to see a member go without a response... NOOOO I don't and I feel bad especially if it's a new member that may get the impression they are being deliberately ignored.

I'm sorry if some feel the same as Gertrude, but I am just trying to be helpful as much as I possibly can.

Besides how often do I get the answer right? And anyone is more than welcome to continue contributing with the thread I have replied to. Why stop just because I have tried to answer the question myself?

Understand now?

And next week I return to work from disability and will only be here around 5 hours per day. Knock yourself out. :p

Hopefully they will take the hint and start answering even more questions. :)

First, congrats at reaching your 30,000 th post.

Second,
Do I like to see a member go without a response... NOOOO I don't and I feel bad especially if it's a new member that may get the impression they are being deliberately ignored.
(I don't know if anybody else feels or has had this problem, but...) If you (mdwatts) don't know the answer to a thread, you post a google search. That may work for you, as you've commanded the respect from all the people at JL, but as for other members that have a low post count, we tend to get flamed or get told "if you don't have a good answer to my question then don't post", for suggesting a G4L/JL search. That's one of the reason's that I (personally) don't post answer's to questions that I don't know off the top of my head, as most of my post are done at work where I don't have a linux box in front of me to see if my answer is correct.

BTW, now you have the Grand Master title, are you going to put Mr Google back in there as well. :)

btw...I remembered once when everyone was welcoming back mdwatts..what happen that time? and what's on mdwatts returning back to work from disability?

even if i know the exact step for step, word for word answer, i try to keep it somewhat vague at first, the point of the forums is to help people, and they need to learn, so putting them on the right path and not holding their hands is pretty much the best way to do it, but they can always post back if having trouble and more members can jump in and get down to the nitty gritty if they need it, thats whats so great about the linux community, and thats the strongest competition to closed source alternatives

Just let those kind of responses roll though; you can always choose to stop helping anyone who doesn't appreciate your efforts.

and some of us do realize that it is volunteers that do the work here, and well, thanks mods :) if it wasn't for you, we wouldn't have our pm's from enraged people, and we do want to keep those :p

Indeed he is a grand master!

I great master, and a great friend.

Don't worry all as I will be locking this as I have to adhere to the posting guidelines.

I just noticed that a friend from work has registered and I had just sent a PM to him just before I noticed this posted in the Installation forum.

Thanks Wasyl and what have I been telling you all these years? Get started already and install Linux on your brand new pc.

Best regards my friend

30,925? That was at 4:55. ;)

Game over? You want me to end the game and leave? :(

I never even thought I would get to a thousand when I first joined and noticed Sensei, Craig M. with a few thousand posts of their own. I wondered at the time how in h311 could one ever get to 4 or 5 thousand and there was no way I could ever get to that amount myself.

Just shows what you can accomplish if you ignore all the other pending projects you have at home.

I have thought of that, but my health puts a damper on doing much else besides my normal day job (when I return from short term disability in a couple of weeks) and stuff at home (including JL).

What do we need money for anyways? Besides I have more saved in the bank than I could ever spend (being resonable and not a yaght).

mdwatts,
About a year ago I was struggling with my monitor on my first linux install because it was set up first with a different one. I could hardly believe how patient you were with me, and I never even said how it finished. Half the problem was that I did not know just how odd it was. Eventually it was taken back to the shop and after playing "musical monitors" it turned out that everything was in full graphics mode including the virtual terminals, and that the monitor itself could display a gui legibly or graphics during startup legibly, but not both. You get what you pay for in hardware - this was free. I never quite appreciated at the time just how much good advice I was getting, but now I know a little bit more it's obvious.
THANK YOU:)
