This is what i would like to do. I would like to be able to have web pages for different companies hosted off of my computer. Each company would have its own web address (ie www.company1.com, www.company2.com). I have no idea where to start and am willing to switch linux distrobutions(currently Redhat Linux 9) Is this possible to do or do i just need to scratch the idea?

i would go to the apache.org website, and look at their documentation on "virtual domains", as far as i know you can setup as many virtual domains as your server can handle
