I am new to Linux, so please fogive me if I ask a rather stupid question(s).

I am trying to build a network with 7 clients using windows xp pro and a server using redhat.

I just want to know in general how can I manage user logon though redhat? or can it be done?

also some setup help would be nice :)

Thanks
Jeff

Are you looking for file and print sharing (Samba) between Linux and Windows or something like VNC or Putty (search for those) for remote X or remote console?

I think he is asking for the same thing that I am searching for. Is it possable for windows clients to authenticate user accounts threw a linux server, rather than having to setup user accounts on each machine individually for each user.

Have a search here (or Google for Linux) for 'samba pdc' as you'll likely find quite a few tutorials on how to setup.

Thanks, Dan and mdwatts, you guys hit the nail right on the head.

I just didn't see forking out a massive amout of $$$ for windows server 2003 when I knew that has to be a way for RedHat to do it.

Glad we could be of some help.

Have a look through the Redhat documentation for your version as they should have guides on the Samba setup though they will likely not cover PDC.

http://www.redhat.com/apps/support/

I do remember seeing (a while ago) a tutorial in the 'How I did it' forum for setting up Samba as a PDC.

Here's a good tutorial on setting up a Samba PDC:

<points to post above this>

Is this still a valid tutorial if I'm using RH 9, with

samba
Version : 2.2.7a Vendor: Red Hat, Inc.
Release : 7.9.0 Build Date: Thu 13 Mar

?

the documentation for the tutorial says;

<The current stable release of Samba at the time of this writing is version 2.2.3a, which is used as the basis of this tutorial. Note that the current SAMBA_2_2 CVS development tree is close to release (slated for mid-April 2002), which will become 2.2.4. Check Samba's Web site (www.samba.org) for release notes and details; if Samba 2.2.4 is avaiable, use it--it includes several important bug fixes relating to printing and domain controller functionality.>

I just don't want to follow this and find it no longer applies.

Thanks!
