i have checked the router to make sure that it is forwarding the correct ports to the pc
What is the router??
What ports and protocols did you open up??
you need to have tcp port 1723 open/forwarded..
you need to have protocol 47 (gre) open/forwarded..
That protocol 47 not port 47.....
What error messages is the client giving you??

:D ..... build a linux router ..... :D
Maybe use your poptop box as the router,
what else is this box doing?

its only in trial atm, but if i can get the bloody thing to work 100% its gonna end up as a - Webserver, Fileserver, Database, samba share etc.
I would do this but my boss, who has asked me to find out more doesnt like 'software' routers as they have more to go wrong... hardware - pull the power and start it again :)
but as im a novice all the forwarding and routing seems a bit of a daunting task :s
Thanks

oh yea.. phoned my wholesaler to double check about the dsl-500 router if it supports vpn, which the catalogue says it does and they confirm that it does run vpn, just something with firmware versions is the problem, so off i go to update the firmware :)

And the linksys doesn't use software???? What do you think the "firmware" is.....

i think he means less to go wrong, with computers, memory could crap up, hdd could pack in, psu could go and toast everything, as with router its a simple, yes it works or no it doesnt. I think thats his opinion on it.
