I was trying to install Gentoo (reading the docs of course) and I found that it couldn't find my pcmcia card. This card is a Kingston KNE-PC2BT.

So I tried to load it up myself:

# modprobe pcnet_cs
ds: no socket drivers loaded!
/lib/modules/2.4.20-xfs-42/pcmcia/ds.o: init_module: Operation not permitted
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
/lib/modules/2.4.20-xfs-r2/pcmcia/ds.o: insmod /lib/modules /lib/modules/2.4.20-xfs-r2/pcmcia/ds.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.20-xfs-r2/pcmcia/ds.o: insmod pcnet_cs failed

I don't know what it could be, in all the other distros the pcmcia card worked perfectly.

Btw, I'm using Gentoo 3-stages 1.4 rc4.

We did, but were trying to ignore it. ;)

Looks like you have some kind of resource conflict. Does your laptop have the PnP OS option in the bios?

If not, check to see what resources are being used.

cat /proc/interrupts

cat /proc/ioports

Then look in /etc/pcmcia as there are some pcmcia config files you can use to specify what resouces to use.

The BIOS has to be ok. The pcmcia perfectly with slack 9/Debian. Anyway.. I'll check what resources are being used. Thanks.

Too bad. I knew something was wrong...

I was not using the "dopcmcia" option :rolleyes:

Damn, I always fall into stupid things :p Ahhr... well, now I'm trying to install it.

it's in the install document under 2.booting, which he didn't read :)
