Every once in a while I run into Web sites filled with foreign characters. Maybe I'll be at a Chinese or Japanese site and it will say "Linux" in the middle of all of the fancy characters. Haven't other languages developed their own letters or words to mean Linux?

I think it's because it's a trademark. Like Ford, or Coca-Cola. You're not really supposed to change it.

Many times a "foreign" word will be incorporated into a language using their own native alphabet, with their own unique pronounciation. Let me translate both phonetically in bold and literally the above logo (lifted from a Korean website), interestingly enough, it uses quite a few english words:

(Han-gul) (ri-nuk-su) (tip) (pu-ro-jek-tu)

(Korean language) (Linux) ('tip') (project) :) -and yes they have their own words for "tip" and "project" but sometimes you see this kind of adoption of foreign words

It's very common to see this kind of thing in these languages. Although you might also see リヌクス or something like that in Japanese.

btw, I see only fSfkfNfX with a u over the S and the f's are slanted. Somehow I don't think I'm supposed to be seeing it like that.

Yeah, there might be some variations depending on the persion who writes it though. In Japanese, you will just usually see UNIX or LINUX and even WINDOWS in Latin letters.

This is because there is no "L" in Japanese, so they substitute the "R" in it's place. It then becomes "RiNiKuSu" or somesuch.

Japanese is a syllabic language, meaning they use a consonant/vowel for the characters, the exceptions being the vowels themselves, and the "N" and "M" sounds. Usually, any character that has a "U" in it is pronounced with a very short (or non-existant) "Ooo" sound. This is why the "Ku" and "Su" are prefered for the "X" in "RiNiKuSu", as it'll sound more like "RiNiKS".

The argument over there is whether it's pronounced "ReNiKS", "RiNiKS", "ReNeKS", or RiNeKS" :)

Well, the らりるれろ　line is basically just that sound. I suppose when compared to English, it is the "r" sound, but when compared to Spanish, for instance, it could be either "l" or "r" or even half way. Even between Japanese speakers, it can be pronounced like a Spanish "l" or "r". It all depends on the type of Romanization used but since Japanese doesn't have a native Roman script, you can't say the don't have an "r". They have the sound, all right.

I suppose we should make a 漢字 for Linux :D

If you're seeing a bunch of special characters, I think there is a way to install language packs for Mozilla... I can read Chinese in it...

if you get all the square characters, you should install the kochi fonts.
