Apparently there is going to be a hacking contest at some point soon where people try to hack as many sites as possible. Has anybody else heard about this? Some people have said that it is a hoax.

I have just found another article about this. Has anybody on here had any problems?

Don't you mean cracking spree? Go to Eric Raymond's 'How to Become a Hacker' at http://catb.org/~esr/faqs/hacker-howto.html
After reading Hackers challenge 'could be hoax' (http://www.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,4057,6704119%255E1702,00.html) (News.com)... I really don't know... as the website (http://defacers-challenge.com/) looks active and as if this thing might actually happen. Sounds too kiddie to be a 'real' (cr/h)acking contest... but you never know.

I've seen the site. Brazilian in origin (you can tell by the quality of their English). Zone H, which they were using for tallies, is apparently under a dDoS attack which means that the "contest" was delayed. The problem is not wether it was a hoax or not, it's that since the media got hold of it, now everyone knows about it and now more people will take part of it regardless if it was real or not to begin with.
Besides, these contests happen all the time.

Cyber vandals are really no better than those who vandalise things in real life. Besides, they can figure out who you are with relative ease. Besides, what's the challenge in hacking a site anyhow? Where's the satisfaction? Only knowing that you've caused distruction and lost work and not happiness and improved productivity.
Then again, any intelligent site administrator will back up his site once a week at least to minimize the damage done by said hackers. After all, the best security I suppose is being prepared for something to go wrong. Above all I guess remember the '6 P rule.' Proper Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance.

It looks like the site is active this Monday a.m. I just left them a false list of sites about 2 pages long sent via a temporary trial account which I shut down afterwards. I figure if I cause them to waste some time I'm helping the rest if the world a little. It's amazing to me what some folks need to do to make their lives more appealing to themselves.
I read some of them describe themselves as "Robin Hoods" keepng the internet for the people, but I think they're helping "Prince John" in the long run.

As of sometime today I think the numbers were around 500-600 sites that got defaced on Sunday, so it did happen. I dont see how the government set up a trap. It looks to me like someone set up a website and it got all kinds of media coverage for whatever reason, and a few houndred sites got defaced. If there wasn't any media coverage. I bet the numbers would have been below 100. I think the media is more of a problem here then the government.

I've read in a few places the the U.S. government will hold these types of contests. Usually the winner gets a job (pending background checks and what have yous) with the government. The rational being these kids/young adults are on the cutting edge ot technology and may know of other ways to access servers. Rather than send one of their people to class, they just pick up the most "qualified" person by weeding them out of a few thousand people.

Yes, this is very true in movies produced by Hollywood and in the minds of script kiddies everywhere. If I find the right script somewhere, I'll work for the CIA and have cutting edge technology. However "A recently declassified study said the CIA was five years behind the rest of the world when it came to using technology to do its job." So yeah, sure. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/2965620.stm

On the other hand the spooks have big silicon systems for doing things like searching the entire DES keyspace if need be.
