i've had linux on my computer for a while now. i bought a new computer which has windows xp (ntfs filesystem) on it. is there anyway i can repartition my drive without buying a partitioner like partition magic. i've been looking on the internet for a free one with ntfs support for a while with no luck. microsoft's disk utilities can do some things with partitions but (as much as i've found) doesn't resize. is it possible to delete the partition and create a smaller one in it's place, or would that ruin my data?
i realize this isn't really a linux question, but you guys have always been so helpful, and i don't really know where else to ask. thanks

NTFS resizing is way too flaky, at least with the free utilities. The only free apps I know of are various distro installers (Phat linux is one, but I'm not going to recommend it since I haven't used it or heard good things about it), and since the Linux NTFS modules have trouble even writing data to empty space on an NTFS partition without corrupting existing data, I doubt it would be any better with resizing.
I'd either suggest formatting and repartitioning from within the Windows XP installer, or getting an addtional hard drive.

The partitioning tool Mandrake 9.1's installer uses can resize NTFS partitions quite nicely, I've been told.

And the link I posted in this thread (http://justlinux.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=106141) not too long ago.
Apparently RIP supports resizing NT/W2K/XP's ntfs.

I watched one friend of mine corrupt his Windows Partition beyond repair this way, and another friend told me his was corrupted using MDK's tool as well. Try it if you want though. If Mandrake released it I would assume it works at least some of the time. :)
