I'm stuck in a "help loop" with SuSE and Nvidia. I've followed both outfit's instructions for installing the Nvidia GXL and kernel files to enable 3D acceleration for my Geforce2 MX, and nothing works.

I've got the two Nvidia RPMs and ".run" files saved in usr/src/packages/rpm/i586. YaST gives me all kinds of XFree86 conflicts when I try to install them.

SuSE says "Use the Nvidia installer" but what is it? That ".run" file? YaST and SaX don't recognize it.

This really sucks, because otherwise 8.2 rocks. Help!!!

Follow the instructions on the Nvidia site, never mind SuSE. You should be getting an installer, a .run file or .sh (can't remember) and execute it (use your favorite terminal, cd to the folder and type ./filename).

After downloading it, you should get out of a Graphical User Interface, that is, log out of your session, and press Alt+Ctrl+F2, give username: root, and the root password when asked, type
init 3
this should bring down the Graphical User Interface (X Windows).

Now execute the program as above. When all is done, restart your computer to activate the driver, and log back in to your GUI. execute the 3Ddiag program, it should tell you if all is ok, and what to do if not.

Nvidia recommends you use their installer not yast.
you should have a shell install skript which ends in .run once this is installed you can then configure for 3d using yast.

I would sudjest you download the most recent drivers from nividia and read the install instructions.

I had no problem in installing these drivers.

I wonder if

Note: If you are using SuSE 8.1 or earlier, or if you are using United Linux 1.0, we recommend installing from RPMs built by SuSE. These are available via ftp. If you install via the .run file, XFree86 configuration with SaX2/YaST2 will not work correctly. For more information, see the NVIDIA Installer HOWTO for SuSE Linux at http://www.suse.de/en/private/download/xfree86/index.html.

also applies to SuSE 8.2?

Actually, RTFM from both Nvidia *and* SuSE was the first thing I did. SuSE's procedure was a non-starter (woulddn't tar/makefile the RPMs due to Xfree86 conflicts.

Nvidia led me down a garden path of endless recompiles and linuxconfs.

Makes me want to go back to FreeBSD (chuckle).
