[B]DISCLAIMER[B/]: This is a RANT and a VENT. And I am sure that someone will jump on this and start flaming away. So before you do keep in mind I am not a newbie by any means, I am just pressed for time and frustrated. Now on to my RANT!!!

Nope not yet! That's right even though I am now enjoying my new SuSE 8.2 Linux system (5th time installed...) I am here to say that I believe that it is still not ready for the average user. Corporate desktops, sure, they have support in place to resolve the numerous issues that will arise as they always do. They also have the $$$ to pay for support. But for the average schmo at home, Linux is still not ready. And here are 3 of the many simple things I have found as to why:

1.Changing cursors
2.Install VPN software
3.Configuration of VMWare (my Win2K partition on my laptop, click, click done!)

Sure you can do all the neat things that you do in windows, but that isn't all. Users like to install things either to make their desktop theirs or to make it easier for them to do their thing. And that is where Linux is still lacking. A simple thing as changing the cursor look and size. Windows it's a couple of clicks and done. Don't like what came with the system? Install new mouse theme and use it, simple as that! I have been reading and working and modifying and reading some more just to make my mouse a bit larger... guess what! It's the same size it was when I installed the system! Even though I have followed every instruction and tutorial that I could dig up from the internet, I still can't get a simple thing like my cursor to change.
I have a 21? monitor set to 1280x1024 at 16 bit (since Linux 3D can't run at a 24bit or better resolution, another area of contention!) anyhow at this resolution the mouse pointer is about the size of a fleas ***! Really hard to see, some times I will spend over a minute trying to find the stupid cursor. Now in Gnome, you can change the mouse pointer to a larger size and it will even show you where it is when you press the CTRL key! But I use KDE 3.1.1 because sound works and so does the power save and then even though it's not a high pri thing for most, I can run either the KDE multi-background or I can use CHGB to do that. I have a lot of pictures of my daughter, which is in another state with her evil mother (another story another time...)

What I am getting at is the fact that simple little things like installing different mouse cursors and setting them up should be easy, but in true UNIX and Linux fashion, it's a royal pain in the ***! And I have yet to get it to work. So I am, reading more and reviewing the edits I have made to the many different files to see if maybe I missed something.

Other things that I am peeved about, I still can't get Vmware to configure itself. I keep getting the same error. So I am a little ticked about that! I mean a $300.00 license and neither SuSE or VMWare tech support has been able to help me get this silly thing to configure. But I am still working on it! Now I am totally terrified to even fathom the nightmare that awaits me with the VPN set up! I tried once and, well let's just say that now before I make any changes to any configurations or install any software that I am new to I create a back-up that I can roll my system back to when I end up screwing it up like last time. Now that SuSE has finally made that an easy process. Took 3 install attempts to finally get a working install after that fiasco!

These things I am complaining about, granted I am not an average user but just think if I were! You can pretty well bet that with the success rate I have had lately, Linux would not be on my desktop for very long! Then there is the inconsistant printer identification between applications and then the inability to copy text between some apps... I can keep going but my woman is calling and quite frankly, she is more enticing than this stupid computer! Goodnight and who know's maybe tomorrow I will finally get one of my 3 tasks completed! But I am not holding my breath for that!

Peace out...

Linux can't run 3D apps at 24 bit color? I don't believe you.
Otherwise, you sound like an angry person in need of some anger management therapy.
The only thing i agree with you about is the cursor thing.
I have known several people, with no linux experience at all, that have installed SUSE successfully the first time and kept it.

the 3D thing in that yes it will run, but my experience with 3 different 3D capable video cards, on e ATi and 2 nVidia based chip sets, is that over 16bit the systems capacity is severely <sp> reduced. It becomes choppy when tasked and even though I am asking the video card to perform the work it seems that the system itself is doing it, because if I try to do something else it takes forever.

I am not saying that people can't install and use Linux, but if they want to do simple things like add a new mouse theme, set up thier system to connect to a Microsoft VPN or modify complex Word documents, or install software that requires librarys that are not in the system already, the average schmo can't do it. Trust me, the people at work think I am a computer whiz just because I can write web pages and Access / Oracle database applications! Most of them are happy when they get a new game installed on thier winboxes.

And as far as anger management, been there twice.... doesn't work.

I hear ya! One thing I have found about SuSE, if it ain't pre-compiled it takes an act of congress to get something installed. I use SuSE but they put things in strange places sometimes.

Be sure to forward the relative points and your wish list to SuSE -I'd hate to think I am the only one who does that.

24-bit 3D can be a pain, as it isn't possible on some video cards (My Voodoo 3 won't do it either).

Can't say I had too much difficulty changing the mouse cursors, though it's not as obvious as it is in Windows. I'm sure it would be possible to write a program to make it easier. I might try that at some point - should be a good way for me to learn some GTK stuff. :)

Connecting Linux to a Microsoft VPN? Simple? Let's see how simple it is to connect Windows to a Linux NFS shall we?

As for Word documents, it's a Microsoft thing. It's deliberatly harder to do in Linux. The solution is to avoid Word documents, and make NO exceptions. I've gone as far as setting up e-mail filters that bounce messages with Word docement attatchements (with an explanation) and handing all disk copies of my uni work in in OpenOffice's native (.sxw) file format, despite the fact that my university doesn't have a single copy of OpenOffice or StarOffice (Or at least, not until September, I managed to single-handedly convince them that students who cannot afford Windows and MS Office for their own computers require it. :)).

the PPTP client (http://pptpclient.sourceforge.net/howto-suse-82.phtml) is pre-compiled

CMonster! Wow, I was beginning to wonder if I was the only one having issues with SuSE software installs after the fact! I did find an FTP site with SuSE 8.2 rpm's so I will go there and obtain the ppptp and other rpm's that I will need for the VPN set-up.

Still can't get the VMWare to run the vmware-config.pl script. VMWare and SuSE are both aware and trying to help with that issue. Need VMWare for my Access apps at work and those pesky MS specific word documents. And I don't think I will be able to get many people in my company to convert just because I feel that the MS word doc is a pain! I mean this is an international company! McGraw and Hill... and they have many other companys in thier realm. So I am stuck with what the company dictates. So in that case I adapt to it and use other means. And for many of the things I need, Open Office and Star Office can't do it. It's gotta be MS office.

On the plus side though! I did get, for the first time ever! My SuSE system to read digital data from a compact flash card via USB! But if it wasn't for the fact that I know how to edit the fstab (average schmo again....) I never would have known it was being read let alone what to do to get it so I could use it! Another thing, I still have to issue the mount command via CLI unless I use the desktop icon for the various drive(s) / partitions. But in my case I disable all desktop icons and use the tool bar... what ever I got the silly thing to work!!! Finally success!

I just got back from watching my girlfriend at work, (go to picture below, it's 800x600 for those of us on dial-up) anyhow she works at the Monterey Bay Aquarium as a diver for the Underwater Explorers Program! This is a cool program for kids 8-13, they can actually use SCBA gear and swim in the tide pool looking at various animals / creatures in thier natural habitats while learning about conservation and enviromental protection! Awesome program with a great message for children as well as adults! So if you are looking for a nice vacation...

Montery California and go to the Monterey Bay Aquarium! I had fun just watching and taking photos.

Okay I am off to download some .RPM's and do some more reading. Who know's maybe I will get the VPN working tonight! Then all that is left is the cursors and the VMWare!

Peace Out...
