Will a Pentium 75 with 32mb of ram run a small file server or a small email server. The file server would be only for computers on my network, and the email server would only be for 5-10 people.

What would a good distro be for this? I was looking at the bbc linux and vector linux because there light weight. Anyone have any experince with either of them?

Thanks

Use Debian. It's the best distro.

Any of the BSDs would work well. Slackware would be a good choice as well if you need a slim distro and don't mind pounding your head against the wall due to unmet dependancies.

Those specs should suffice as a small file/mail server as long as you don't plan on using X/Gnome/KDE etc.

Just leave it in text mode (runlevel 3).

Lots of specific types of distros can be found at http://old.lwn.net/Distributions/

WOW, you mean it could run a file server and a mail server. Is there anyway it could act as a router and the above at the same time. *crosses fingers*.

Thanks

As long as you don't have that many services enabled.

You would have to try it as nobody can guarantee it will work.

I used to use Slackware. It was my first distro and I thought it was pretty cool. Now that I've switched to Debian... let's just say that I'll probably never use another distro again.

FreeSCO (http://www.freesco.org)

this does your file and router, but no mail server. boot off a floppy into ram.

Wow do i need to download all of the .iso's for debian or will i be ok with just the compact .iso. I decided to just use it as a mail/file server and buy a router.

Thanks

You could use it as a router, too. It would be a whole heck of a lot cheaper than a hardware router, especially if you already have a hub and two network cards. It will perform all of those tasks just fine if that's all that is running on the box. Heck, two network cards and an 8 port switch should cost about $50 US, half as much as a router.

And, you don't have to download any .iso for Debian. All you need is two boot floppy images, as it can install directly from the internet using apt.

In this case I'd only suggest you to get Debian since you can easy install a minimal system using less than 200mb of hd space. I think that it would be enough for what you want to do.
