Gentoo: error during emerge system "cpp fails sanity check"

while attempting to "emerge system" during an install on my p4 w/ 1Gb RAM from a stage 1 tar ball i get the following error:

"configure: error: C++ preprocessor fails sanity check"

this is during the emerge of ncurses.
i can post my make.conf and the scripts i use to automate my install (i've had it fail too many times) if anyone thinks that would be useful

error also occurs when i attempt to manually "emerge ncurses"


PS- anyone who ever said that gentoo is a viable newb distro is ****ing ****ting me

probably would be useful if you are automating it.

my guess is your script has omitted a step in the install doc.

also - have you tried posting on the gentoo message board?

the Gentoo install works every time unless you have missed a step, done something wrong, have a bad CD, etc.

emerge --nodeps portage

the error is normally caused from old install media or from emerge -u system during the install instead of emerge system
